When people think of Fort McMurray, Alberta, they often picture long winters and short summers. But if you’ve actually spent a summer here, you know there’s a lot more to the story.

Yes, some summer days can be smoky. Wildfire smoke is a reality we occasionally deal with in Northern Alberta, and some years are certainly smokier than others. But that doesn’t take away from just how beautiful Fort McMurray can be during the summer months.

And our summers aren't quite as short as people might think!

Summer Comes Alive in Fort McMurray

By July, the community is in full summer mode. Our long daylight hours give us plenty of time to get outside, and you'll find people all over the community enjoying everything the season has to offer.

Families are cooling off at outdoor water parks and spray parks, community events are happening throughout the region, and our extensive trail system is full of walkers, runners and cyclists.

One of my favourite things about Fort McMurray is how much access we have to nature without having to leave the city. You can go from your neighbourhood to a beautiful wooded trail in minutes.

And Yes... We Love Our Dogs!

If there is one thing I've noticed about Fort McMurray, it's that we have a lot of dog lovers here!

On a summer evening, you're almost guaranteed to see people out walking their dogs, exploring the trails or spending time at one of the local dog parks. Our community has plenty of space for four-legged family members to get outside and enjoy the summer too.

It’s one of those little things that makes Fort McMurray feel so welcoming and community-oriented.
